Cows eating Top Ramen, potato chips and cupcakes? An unlikely product of the rise of corn-based ethanol.

With the drive to create corn-based ethanol fuel exploding, corn prices have seen a dramatic increase over the past couple of years (above $5.50 a bushel, which is double the price from three years ago).

Farmers, who use corn to feed and fatten cattle, are needless to say feeling the squeeze in prices.

In an article in the Hanford Sentinel, farmers are beginning to supplement cattle feed with odd items like discarded Top Ramen noodles, orange pulp, cup cakes, pastries and potato chips to offset the rising cost of corn feed.

More on this strange, emerging trend here.

Are cows being raised to become couch potatos?

Cheers!

Interesting. So, will cows get even fatter? Shouldn't they watch their saturated fat intake? What about trans fat? What I mean is, does this lead to healthy cows and milk and beef?

That does not sound like a very appetizing mix. I guess no one cares what the cows think. I would not want to eat old potato chips mixed up with stale cupcakes and orange pulp. Blarg.

I expect the next headline we will see is "Cost of Insulin on the rise" due to demands by diabetic livestock. Afterall, humans will be sharing their overindulgance with livestock along with the reprecussions of eating too much sugar.

This is part of the reason my fiance and I decided to purchase into a cow share. We know exactly how the cows are being cared for and what they are being fed.
